3 Tips to Prepare For Your Engagement Session

I have been there. You scheduled your engagement session, you know when it’s happening - you know whyyyy it’s happening - but then you think…what now?! I get it. Been there, done that. When I was newly engaged I had my entire Pinterest filled with how I envisioned my photos. I knew what I wanted to wear and how I wanted to look but then I actually needed to get there. So, in this article you can find some quick tips on how to prepare for your engagement session and ensure your vision comes to life.

Step 1:

If you have not already, head to Pinterest and find your INSPO. Create a mood board by pinning images that reflect your style and the feeling you want in your photos. Look for color schemes, poses, and locations that resonate with you and your partner. I believe that having a vision is key when it comes to these photos. You want your images to be true to you, your significant other, and show your personality! It’s one thing to just have some nice photos to throw on your save-the-date versus having an entire gallery that you and your partner actually want to hang up in your house after you’re married. Say for example…you both love to read and drink coffee so you snapped some pictures at the local library and some more at one of your favorite coffee shops.

Step 2:

Pick a location that matches the vibe you are going for. I would not say the location can make or break your pics but I would say depending on where you take them the ambiance of your photos can completely change. This is why I would really take some time and imagine where I want them. Also - it’s totally okay if you book your session and are still playing with different locations in your head. Just make sure to finalize your location early to avoid scheduling conflicts or fees. Some recommendations…

  1. Have the atmosphere you are envisioning in your mind as you look at places near you. Are you imagining a romantic picnic on the beach with your soon-to-be-spouse? Or maybe an early morning date at the park?

  2. Consider the time of day and weather when choosing your location. Golden hour (the hour after sunrise or before sunset) often provides beautiful, soft lighting, while midday sun can be harsher and create strong shadows. However, both are beautiful it just depends on what you are going for!

  3. Ask your photographer for suggestions. If they already gave you some pointers and you’re still not sure, shoot them another email! They will be happy to help.

  4. Look at the calendar of events of your location if you know it is a popular spot. They will usually have one on their website or if not, a contact form to inquire.

Step 3:

Plan your outfits! This very well may be my favorite part of engagement sessions, I just LOVE seeing what the brides decide to wear. For this step, the goal is that you both select outfits that boosts your confidence and makes you feel comfortable. Consider how you want to appear in your photos—whether it's casual, a bit more formal, or capturing a specific vibe. No matter the style, your outfit will significantly influence the overall feel of your images. So feel free to go all out! Coordinate with your partner to ensure your outfits complement each other without matching too closely. If you’re unsure, your photographer can offer advice on how to achieve a cohesive look. Here are three things to keep in mind.

  1. Keep it moveable.

Make sure your outfit is breathable and allows easy movement to avoid discomfort or sweating.

  2. Keep it classic.

Choose timeless pieces for photos that you will want to hang on the wall a long long time.

  3. Keep it undeniable.

No matter what you wear let’s just make sure it is undeniably you!

Here’s what to avoid:

  • Gym clothes/shoes.

  • Shirts with logos and brand names.

  • Clashing colors with others in the photos.

  • Overly stiff clothing.

About color. I suggest blending it with neutrals for you and your fiancé to coordinate well especially if one of you is wearing something that pops! Neutrals are also a timeless and a safe choice when feeling a little unsure. These photos down below are a great example of how outfits of white and brown give a classic vibe. However, if you are a color lover as well, let’s do it!! If a bit wary, it might be best to stick to this general rule of thumb.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be ready to enjoy a fun and memorable engagement session. If you have any questions or need help planning, feel free to reach out—I’m here to help you every step of the way!

happy preparing!
